Don’t Be Fooled

It seems like everyone is jumping on the “NATURAL” bandwagon these days.  Especially the big name companies.  Now in days you can find products shouting olive, coconut, sunflower, and sweet almond oil in their products and how healthy it is for your scalp and hair.  Even though there are  additional chemicals you wouldn’t want on you scalp and hair also in the product!  What shocked me the most is now companies are advertising “Honey” “Almond”” Nectar ” and “Olive” in the no-lye relaxers! Yes ma’am!

-Design Essential Honey Nectar time Release Relaxer

-Naked Honey & Almond sensitive scalp relaxer

-Organic Roots & Silk Elements have the Olive Oil Relaxer

I’m not here to tell you not to use relaxers because everyone has a preference …I’m just trying to educate because people might feel that these relaxers are safe and not as harsh because of the added “natural” ingredients and this thinking is far from the truth!

A no-lye relaxer contains potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide. Relaxers straighten curly hair by breaking down the bonds in the hair shaft. If not used correctly, relaxers can cause serious and sometimes irreversible damage to the hair and scalp.

So just because you throw some honey into a no-lye relaxer does not make it better because the hydroxide ingredients are STILL in the product.

What they do not tell you about relaxers is that in a lot of cases the relaxer penetrates your hair follicles and causes burns under the scalp. Although you can go for many years and not experience any side effects from this, eventually the scar tissue will retard your hair growth and in many cases stop all together. This is one of the main reasons black women as they get older have thin hair, from so many years of relaxing. And from not being informed that this could happen to them.

So you might say well you do not apply relaxer to the scalp. This is true but it is impossible to not get a good bit of relaxer on your scalp even for touch ups. This does not matter how often you relax you can get scar tissue from one relaxer application. It also does not matter if you use a texturizer because it is still the same chemical. I would like to point out that on the relaxer box they do warn about scalp burns however most of us are not familiar with under the scalp burns and scar tissue which leads to hair loss after a period of time.

If you have to relax your hair  I  stress that you leave the box relaxer’s alone and have a professional hairstylist who you have seen their work and know they will apply relaxer correctly.  I have seen far too many people do the box relaxer on their own hair and wonder why their hair fell out or is very damaged. Then they go to the professional stylist wanting them to fix their big OOPS!

Again I ask you not to be fooled! about relaxers, The Science of Black Hair, Audrey Davis-Sivasothy
